Frequently Asked Questions

When was the Chorus founded?

1992

Are there chorus dues?

Yes. We collect $40 for the Fall Semester (September–December) and $40 again for the Spring Semester (January–June).

What do our dues and fundraisers pay for?

Music purchases, licenses, copies of music, Music Director and Pianist salaries, custodial fees for the final concert, miscellaneous wardrobe items, insurance, and organization dues.

What if I don't know what section I should sing with?

The Music Director can voice-place you at rehearsal.

Do I need to be able to read music?

No — but you'll be amazed how much you'll learn along the way.

What is my time commitment in the Chorus?

One rehearsal per week, with two weeks off in December and the summer off. Typically, there are four concerts per year (December, January, March, and June), all on Sunday afternoons.

Members also help by selling concert tickets, securing ads for our Program Book, and joining a committee or eventually becoming a committee chair.

We work as a team — everyone gets involved in some way or another!

What do we wear for performances?

We have red chorus shirts with emblems available for $35.

For the final concert, we usually wear all black:
– Ladies: ¾-length black top with slacks or a long skirt
– Men: black dress pants
Closed, comfortable black shoes are a must.

What if I need to be absent? Is there a protocol?

We encourage members not to miss more than three rehearsals per semester. Attendance is mandatory at the two rehearsals before the final concert.

Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Am I able to practice outside of rehearsal times?

Yes! We provide practice tracks for our selections, and sometimes sections hold special rehearsals before a concert if needed.

Is there anything I should know about rehearsals?

We ask members to:
– Arrive on time
– Bring a black 1” three-ring binder and pencil
– Limit talking and raise your hand for questions
– Step outside if you need to take a phone call (otherwise, no cell phone use)

Members also sign up twice per semester to help with setup and breakdown of chairs and tables before and after rehearsal. Please arrive by 5:30 and stay a few minutes late on those nights.
